Under the name Wayward Sparrow, Detroit based songwriter Rich Clark has created a project rooted in stripped back Americana, poetic lyricism and a deliberately sparse approach to arrangement that places mood and narrative at the centre of everything. Fully self-recorded, self-produced, and self-funded, Wayward Sparrow exists less as a polished commercial product and more as an evolving creative space where songs are allowed to breathe, shift shape, and develop naturally.

It’s this ethos that carries directly into “Gravel and Broken Glass,” the latest single from the project and another preview of the forthcoming album Devil By My Side. Drawing influence from Americana, folk, outlaw country, and the atmospheric weight of narrative songwriting, the track continues Clark’s fascination with immersive lyrical imagery and understated musical tension. Originally written around a completely different chord structure, the song transformed during the recording process after experimentation with a new rhythm guitar arrangement pushed it into darker and more textured territory. The result is a track that feels lived-in rather than overworked, where acoustic instrumentation, subtle atmosphere, and restrained production choices combine to create something intimate, reflective, and quietly absorbing.

Acoustic guitar remains the central anchor throughout, providing a steady pulse without overcrowding the arrangement. Around it, smaller details slowly reveal themselves. Vocal phrasing is given room to breathe, while a moody Telecaster solo drifts through the middle of the track. Importantly, none of these elements feel placed there to command attention individually. They exist to deepen the atmosphere and reinforce the emotional weight sitting beneath the surface of the song.

Clark has spoken openly about the importance of poetic construction in his writing, carefully considering word choice, literary devices and flow in order to create something immersive rather than immediately transparent. The lyrics rely more on imagery and implication than direct explanation.

There’s also something refreshing about how unapologetically independent the project remains. Every Wayward Sparrow release is self-recorded and self-produced, not as a stylistic gimmick, but because Clark wanted to fully understand the process behind making records himself. That hands-on approach gives the music a certain character. It doesn’t feel polished into perfection or flattened by overproduction.

What makes “Gravel and Broken Glass” compelling is not any single dramatic moment, but the way everything works together quietly over time. The song never pushes too hard for attention, and because of that, its atmosphere lingers long after it ends. It feels less like something trying to convince the listener and more like something simply existing in its own world, confident enough to let people enter it on their own terms.

That confidence may ultimately become the defining strength of Wayward Sparrow as a project. The music trusts space. It trusts mood. And most importantly, it trusts the listener.

About Wayward Sparrow

Wayward Sparrow is the independent music project of Detroit-based songwriter Rich Clark. After beginning his musical journey as a heavy metal guitarist, Clark gradually moved toward the storytelling traditions of Americana, folk, and country music, drawn to artists who valued narrative depth and emotional atmosphere over excess production.

Built around sparse arrangements and immersive lyricism, Wayward Sparrow focuses on songs that evolve naturally through the recording process. Every release is self-recorded and self-produced, reflecting Clark’s commitment to maintaining a fully hands-on creative approach while allowing each song to retain its own raw character and individuality.

I fell in love with music when I first picked up a guitar at age 8. When I played, my friends and family would smile and spill with joy over the music I played, even though it was never Grammy quality. While my music career never made it past high school, my love for music never waivered. I loved the feeling of bringing a smile to someone's face through music and wanted to keep that passion going. So, I took it upon myself to continue to support and promote artists by writing about their music. This way, I can support my personal passion for music and bring entertain and joy to others through music.  Outside my love for music, I do enjoy a good hike and being in the outdoors. My favorite place that I've hiked is in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. I love to travel too. I've been to Costa Rica, Vancouver, BC, and England, but the best place by far is Germany on Oktoberfest. I liken that experience to being in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I like a good book now and then, but I'm more of a streaming fiend. I live for crime docuseries on Netflix, veterinary shows on National Geographic, and re-watching Scrubs on Hulu.
